hope of the world

Yet another 6/8 song worship song that I really like from Hillsong.

As a worship song, the lyrics actually convey a lot more than generic phrases. Here are some really short micro-reflections on theological issues.

“the price of freedom” – we were bought at a price. 1 Corinthians 6:20

“lifted on high” – Jesus didn’t just die, but he rose again and now sits at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1

“hope of the world” – people put their hope in a lot of things. Sometimes we do this consciously, and other times we only realise in retrospect and periods of reflection. things fail. Jesus is hope of the world – so when we provide hope to others, it has to be Jesus. There is no “things are gonna work out somehow” Isaiah 40:31

“all we need is You” – it’s easy to become accustomed to what we have, and the comforts of living in the first world. But really, it’s good to reflect on our definitions of “need” and “want”, because sometimes the line gets blurred. I know I definitely don’t “need” that new gadget or that new item of clothing, although I might want it. We do a lot of things unproductively. Luke 22:35
