New International Version
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Another snippet from leader’s retreat 2012.
I’ve always read this verse differently. I’m not sure why, maybe it’s the culture I grew up in, or reading a different translation, but I always added (gifts and talents) to the end of verse 11.
Something like… So Christ himself gave the apostles.. gifts and talents to equip his people for works of service.
But if you read it again, it actually says “So Christ himself GAVE THE APOSTLES…”
It goes back to the idea that it’s not about qualification, but calling.
The thing “given” is not a spiritual gift or talent, but the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers. WE are the gift, to equip his people.
So next time you doubt yourself, about your qualifications in your area of ministry (this is including outside of “Church-work” too), YOU were placed there / given by God.
